MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear WHASA Members

WHASA has accomplished 12 Years of consistency in one vision and mission to care for those patients with healable and non-healable wounds.

A dynamic Team spirit with more heart than time; a drive to help others towards best practice guided by a valuable and inclusive constitution; and a generous support from the South African trade industry, have brought WHASA to where it is today.

As well reflected in our updated Website, the outcomes include WHASA regional seminars, workshops and international fora and events with memorable speakers has proven our attractive capabilities and skills that inspired, motivated and paved a bright roadmap to further perspectives.

Standing alongside with academic and international entities as World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS), University of Toronto (IIWCC), University of Hertfordshire, University of Free State and University of Stellenbosch i.e. WHASA managed to establish a benchmark of clinical practice in spite of still being a young organisation.

Some pending fundamental challenges are overdue, hence, in need of collective attention to be addressed as requiring external collaboration with GWLC, DFWG, SAPA, VASA, SPNP, APRRSA and SAMED.

Among the Crucial issues to look at in short and medium term:
  •  WHASA accreditation by: SAQA, SANC, DoH
  •  Final Consensus Documents endorsement by all affiliated or associated organisations
  •  Education framework defining regional integrated activities with trade for 2016-2017 calendar
  •  Publications to be fuelled by our valuable local experiences and papers
  •  Reactivating the recruitment and developing consolidation strategies for individual & corporate membership

In ’’ thinking out of the box’’ by drawing a solid Public Private Partnership (PPP) roadmap during this crucial time towards a rapid expansion, WHASA would remain a source of inspiration and secured support for our members.

The recent WHASA-trade meeting held on the 29th July 2016, has shown an ongoing commitment from our corporate members but consistently recommended more Regional Activities (Seminar-Workshops) from basic to advanced wound care themes to uplift skills in State sector, thus bridging the gap in PPP concept as our prime short term EXCO business action plan.

For the coming 2 years, we have to implement the two important practice items: (1) the physical conceptualizing of teaching pathway and,(2) the validation of the competency of wound care clinicians. In doing so, our full house mission of cost-efficient best practice delivery to our a growing ’’wounded’’ community with the support of the existing Wound Specialists in a new partnering model can assist within this vision. It will add to the availability of both healing and helping hands to drive these initiatives to fruition finally accepted after this EXCO meeting held this 10th September 2016. The stability, growth and prosperity of WHASA will benefit our patients (our prime target), clinicians and trade partners.

    Yours sincerely
    Dr Georges M Balenda

President: Wound Healing Association of Southern Africa
